Self-employed professionals – freelancers, consultants, creative professionals – can obtain a residence permit with a special permit from the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy of Bulgaria.
Free practice is a status that allows foreigners to legally work in Bulgaria as a self-employed specialist: to provide services to Bulgarian and foreign clients, issue invoices and pay taxes in Bulgaria. This is ideal for consultants, IT professionals, designers, educators, and other professionals.
Unlike company registration (EOOD), free practice is an easier and cheaper way to officially work in Bulgaria. No share capital required, no need to hire employees, minimal bureaucracy. The key difference with Digital Nomad is that you can work with Bulgarian clients.
A prerequisite is to obtain a special permit from the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy. After receiving it, you register with the tax authorities as self-employed and receive a residence permit. The average processing time is 3-4 weeks.

We submit an application to the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy of Bulgaria. This is a key and mandatory step – without this permission, registration of free practice is impossible.
After obtaining the permit, we register with the National Revenue Agency (NRA) as self-employed. Choose a tax regime and get a UIC (identification number).
We open a current account in a Bulgarian bank to conduct business transactions and receive payments from customers. This is necessary to apply for a residence permit.
We submit a full package of documents to the Migration Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The basis is the permission of the Ministry of Labor and documents on registration as a self-employed.
After approval, you receive a residence permit card for 1 year. Upon annual confirmation of activities and tax reporting, the permit is extended. After 5 years - the right to permanent residence.
