By choosing such a program to obtain citizenship, the investor acquires government securities in the amount of at least BGN 1,000,000 at the first stage. Such an investment entitles a foreign citizen to obtain permanent residence status within three months – the right to permanent residence in Bulgaria. The investor is assigned a single civil number (EGN), he is enrolled in the registers "Population", and he is granted all the rights that the state provides to its citizens, with the exception of active and passive suffrage, as well as the right to be elected to senior public positions. Moreover, after the investor himself receives permanent residence, his family members also receive permanent residence if desired. If the investor's goal is to obtain citizenship of the Republic of Bulgaria, then after a year of permanent residence, he can proceed to the second stage of investment. Namely, the purchase of another package of state securities in the amount of at least BGN 1,000,000. Thus, the investor will increase his initial investment to BGN 2,000,000, which will give him the right to obtain Bulgarian citizenship. For the first time in the history of the Bulgarian Citizenship Act, the legislator, taking into account the importance of foreign investments, has provided for the shortest possible period for obtaining Bulgarian citizenship 6 months from the date of submission of documents to the "Bulgarian Citizenship" Directorate. Along with this privilege, a number of other, no less significant ones are provided: The investor does not pass the Bulgarian language proficiency exam and does not renounce his real citizenship.
