  • When will Bulgaria adopt the euro?
Bulgaria is expected to officially adopt the euro from January 1, 2026, becoming the 21st country in the eurozone. The European Commission and the European Central Bank have confirmed that the country has met all four criteria of the Maastricht Treaty required to join the euro area
  • What steps have already been taken?
Bulgaria has already been participating in the exchange rate mechanism since July 10, 2020, with the lev/euro exchange rate set at 1.95583 leva ≈ 1 euro. In June 2025, the European Commission released a report confirming Bulgaria's readiness to adopt the euro. Following the approval of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU on 8 July 2025, all legal acts have been adopted, including the establishment of a fixed exchange rate of 1.95583 BGN for 1 EUR
  • How are they preparing for the transition?
From August 8, 2025, annual price controls have been introduced. Stores are required to show prices in leva and euros, and in case of unjustified price increases, the state has the right to intervene. The sanctions range from 2,556 to 511,290 euros. After January 1, 2026, both signs – the lev and the euro – will be used for another month. The lev can be exchanged indefinitely at the Bulgarian National Bank.
  • What should you expect?
January 2026 is the moment of the introduction of the euro. August-October 2025 is a transition period: double pricing, control measures, informing the population. *Advantages: reduction of transaction costs, stability of savings, growth of investments. * Risks and worries: possible short-term price increases, loss of independence in monetary policy, cultural factor. Conclusion: Bulgaria is on the verge of a historic event – its transition to the euro has already been predetermined at the legislative level, and will begin on January 1, 2026.
