From October 12, 2025, the EES (Entry/Exit System) system will be launched in the EU. It will replace stamps in passports and will record the entry and exit of foreigners in electronic form.
How it works
* At the border, citizens of countries outside the EU will be fingerprinted and face photos taken.
* The database will save passport data, dates and places of crossing, cases of refusal of entry.
* Children under 12 years old are only photographed.
* Full launch of the system is expected by April 2026.
ETIAS – Phase Two
From the end of 2026, the ETIAS system will also appear. This is an online permit for citizens of countries with a visa-free regime.
* The cost is about 20 euros.
* Valid for up to 3 years or until the expiration of the passport.
* Issued via the Internet or mobile application.
Who will be affected
* All foreigners entering the Schengen area.
* Exceptions are EU citizens, holders of long-term visas, diplomats.
* In Ireland and Cyprus, stamps in passports will remain for the time being.
Pros and cons
Pros: more security and control, faster repeat trips.
Cons: there may be queues and delays at the start, there are still questions about data protection.

* Check that you have a biometric passport.
* Be prepared to take photos and scan prints at the border.
* Apply for the ETIAS in advance when it goes live.
* At first, it may take longer to pass the control.
