The first step is expected for Bulgaria to enter the airspace of the Schengen area in the spring of 2019. This may happen before the elections to the European Parliament, which will be held in May this year. This was reported by the Bulgarian TV channel BTV Novinite, citing sources of the Bulgarian Ministry of Internal Affairs. For Bulgarians, there will be canceled passport checks at airports, and passengers in Europe will be directed to baggage carousels, bypassing border controls. This step is a strong enough argument in favor of the efforts made by the Bulgarian government in recent years to join the Schengen area. The second stage – the abolition of checks at internal land borders, according to MEPs, will entail a number of risks and may have a negative impact on the future enlargement of the Schengen area. Therefore, Bulgaria will not be in the land Schengen area for the time being due to migration pressure. The country is the external border of the EU and if Bulgaria gets into the Schengen area, migrants living in the country will be able to pass freely without passport control throughout Europe.
