Accession to the EU Bulgaria became a member of the European Union on 1 January 2007, together with Romania. This step was the result of many years of reforms and the country's desire to integrate into the European community. Membership has given Bulgaria access to single markets, structural and investment funds, as well as extensive cooperation programs in various fields. Economic and political role Single Market: Bulgaria participates in all EU freedoms – freedom of movement of goods, services, capital and people. This stimulated trade and investment. Political participation: the country has its representatives in the European Parliament (17 MEPs), participates in the work of the Council of the EU and has a European Commissioner (in 2024-2029 it is Iliana Ivanova, responsible for innovation, research, culture, education and youth). Financial support: Bulgaria remains one of the largest recipients of European funds in the region, which helps to develop infrastructure, agriculture and education. Participation in EU programs Bulgaria is actively involved in key initiatives: Cohesive policy is to obtain funds for the construction of roads, modernization of railways, water supply, and energy. Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) – support for farmers and rural development. Erasmus+ — student and educational exchanges, participation of universities in international projects. Horizon Europe – Research and Innovation. The EU's Green Deal is a gradual transition to sustainable energy and a green economy. Schengen – Bulgaria is not yet a full member of the Schengen area, but participates in part of its mechanisms; Entry into the full zone is expected in the coming years. Geopolitical significance Bulgaria occupies a strategic position in the southeast of Europe, at the crossroads between the Balkans, the Black Sea and the Middle East. As a result, the country plays an important role in: • EU energy policy (gas transit, diversification of supplies); • protection of the external borders of the European Union; • development of transport corridors between Europe and Asia. Prospects Bulgaria's immediate goals within the EU: * introduction of the euro from January 1, 2026; • Further use of European funds for digital and green transformation. Bulgaria is thus perceived as an important participant in European integration: the country receives significant benefits from membership, but is also obliged to actively participate in solving common problems – from energy and security to climate change and migration policy.
