Motor third party liability insurance in Bulgaria is called "Civil Contract" and is mandatory for every vehicle that is registered and not deregistered on the territory of the Republic. The insurance company in which the culprit of the traffic accident has issued his policy assumes all mutual claims and compensation for the damage suffered: – property and non-property damage as a result of bodily injury or death; – damage caused to someone else's property; – lost profits, which are a direct and immediate result of damage; – Reasonable expenses incurred in connection with the claim under the previous three texts, including legal costs awarded to the insured person.
Which countries does this type of insurance apply to?
The Republic of Bulgaria, a member state of the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA), Andorra, Switzerland and Serbia, as well as those who have signed the Multilateral Green Card Agreement. A free Green Card certificate is issued to other countries participating in the Green Card Agreement – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Macedonia, Israel, Iran, Moldova, Morocco, Russia, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, Montenegro and Azerbaijan.
What is special about a Green Card certificate?
The Green Card certificate is valid in the member states of the European Union, the European Economic Area and third countries that are part of the Green Card system, and the certificate itself does not provide insurance coverage. It is issued free of charge on the basis of a valid motor third party liability insurance and confirms its existence with the competent authorities of the Member State concerned. Its validity period is one year and coincides with the term of third-party liability insurance. When traveling to the member states of the European Economic Area, Andorra, Croatia, Switzerland and Serbia, a Green Card certificate is not required. Although some countries do not require a Green Card Certificate, it is advisable to have a valid certificate when traveling to these countries, as it may be required as proof of third-party liability insurance when checked by local authorities. motorists. From 01.01.2016, in accordance with the Bulgarian insurance legislation, a Green Card certificate must be issued together with a compulsory insurance policy for civil liability of vehicle owners, since the Green Card certificate has the same validity period. In case of deferral of payment of the insurance premium, the Green Card certificate is issued for the period for which the insurance premium was paid.
What are the validity periods?
The contract of compulsory insurance "Civil liability" of motorists is concluded for a period of 1 (one) year. Conclusion of an insurance contract for a shorter period, but not less than 30 (thirty) days, is allowed only in the following cases: – upon conclusion of an insurance contract for a vehicle with temporary or transit registration in accordance with the current Bulgarian legislation; – when concluding an insurance contract by enterprises importing and selling vehicles; – when concluding a slow-speed vehicle insurance contract; – when concluding an insurance contract for self-propelled machines.
