On April 5, 2017, the heads of the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy of Bulgaria brought some clarity to the procedure for employing seasonal workers from third countries. Clarifications were given during a meeting of the general working group created to resolve issues from business representatives. At the meeting, in particular, issues related to the desire of Bulgarian businessmen to actively involve personnel from Ukraine and Moldova in the summer tourist season of 2017 were discussed. Among the wishes, an initiative was voiced – to extend the period of employment of seasonal workers allowed today from 90 to 120 days.
Bulgarian Minister of Labor Gylyb Donev made several statements at the meeting clarifying the procedure for hiring temporary foreign personnel. He said that:
- foreign citizens who have arrived in Bulgaria on a tourist visa do not have the right to work in Bulgaria,
- employment contracts must be signed with applicants,
- Work visas for employees cannot be group, but only personal.
It was also emphasized that today International students cannot take the paid internships and internships in Bulgaria.
At the end of the meeting, Bulgarian Ministers Stela Baltova and Gylyb Donev strongly recommended that business representatives first of all pay attention to national applicants with the necessary education and skills.
