Spring is a hot time for parents who have not yet decided to which university or other educational institution in Bulgaria to send their graduate. To make it easier for them to make a difficult choice, we decided to present on the pages of the Migration Center "Window to Bulgaria" the latest global study on the most in-demand professions in the country. At the end of last year, it was published by the well-known company ManpowerGroup Bulgaria based on the results of a survey of 621 national employers. Below we will provide a ranking of Bulgarian universities in the most popular specialties.
LET'S START WITH AN OVERVIEW OF THE LABOR MARKET
The main conclusion that the researchers made last year is that the problem with personnel in the country is getting worse. If in 2015 50% of the surveyed companies reported that they were experiencing a shortage of qualified personnel, then in 2016 this number increased to 62%. The main problems that employers had to face when filling vacancies, they named: 32% – lack of the necessary qualification knowledge and skills (mathematics, languages, ability to solve IT problems, etc.), 30% voiced the lack of applicants themselves, 13% indicated problems with the personal qualities of candidates (enthusiasm, adaptability/flexibility, professionalism, etc.). At the same time, only 12% of employers noted a lack of work experience, and 11% considered that the salary expectations of candidates were inflated.
In her commentary on the research, Nadia Vasileva, Managing Director of ManpowerGroup Bulgaria, said that the most In 2016, the most popular candidates were representatives of qualified workers who decided to change their place of work. In general, according to the results of a survey of Bulgarian employers, the rating of the 10 most in-demand workers in the country in 2016 looked like this:
1. Skilled Workers
2. Engineers
3. Drivers
4. Employees of the restaurant and hotel industries

In early April 2017, the Bulgarian Employment Agency reported on the results of 28 labor exchanges organized by the state structure. They were held throughout the country throughout March. During these events, Bulgarian employers offered 4770 vacancies to applicants. According to the organizers, there are especially many vacancies today in such areas as trade and services, construction, production, agriculture, education and military affairs.
WHERE ARE THE PEOPLE?
The main reason for the acute shortage of skilled workers in Bulgaria, according to national experts, is the too large difference in wages in the country compared to other EU countries. According to their estimates, the wages of experienced workers in Bulgaria are about 40% of the average European salary of the same specialists. The situation is similar with other in-demand professions. For example, according to unofficial data, only 10% of graduates of medical universities in Bulgaria stay to work in their homeland. The rest immediately leave for other EU countries and beyond.
IT specialists who are in last place in the national ranking are constantly hunted in Bulgaria. Almost every second specialized company is looking for new staff. The average salary of IT employees in the country is BGN 2700. (almost 1400 euros), and the number of people employed in this area is about 70 thousand. specialists. Half of whom, by the way, plan to emigrate in the future…
The difficult situation with personnel in the field of construction in early April 2017 was announced by the head of the Association of Builders of Bulgaria (KSB) Svetoslav Glosov. In his opinion, there is an acute shortage of truck drivers, construction equipment operators and other specialists in this area. He also believes that the main problem is that the Bulgarian market is not able to offer the same pay as they offer for the same work in many other countries.
The European Commission also confirms the areas in which Bulgaria is experiencing the most urgent need today. This is the ranking of promising professions in Bulgaria according to data published last year. In the first place are specialists in the mining and construction industries, in the second place are administrative personnel for customer service, In third place are employees of the business services sector.
